I painted these last night but didn’t get chance to post them.

These are Tyranid Ripper Swarms. The paint scheme is simple but I love the effect.

  1. The model and base are sprayed Skull White.
  2. The Chitin(back) and Claws where painted Chaos Black.
  3. Then edge half of the Chitin and Claws where painted using Scab Red.
  4. The edge of the Chitin was then highlighted Blood Red.
  5. Enchanted Blue was applied to the eyes and joints of the limbs, Also to the spines on the back of the centre front model.
  6. The teeth were painted Bleached Bone and the Ribs where washed Bleached Bone.
  7. The tongue was first painted Warlock Purple and then the tip and the top of the tongue where painted Enchanted Blue.
  8. Tiny white dots were added to the eyes.
  9. The stones at the bottom of the model where painted Fortress Grey.
  10. The base is left Skull white give the model a unique look on the battlefield showing that the life from the plant is being eaten (also makes it look more ‘spacey’).

Overall I love how this model has come out, it looks how I imagined it and I can’t wait to see how it looks on my larger models. I used the Ripper Swarm (which I keep caling the Reaper Swarm) as a test model so see if the paint scheme worked and now that it does, I can’t wait to get stuck in with the rest of my force.

My best painted night goblin(in my opinion). Same colours as the rest of my Orc and Goblin Waagh(army). The model was heavily washed in Leviathan Purple wash.

This week in my Warhammer spotlight are my unit of 11 Dryads.

[NOTE: Due to the number of photos I have ‘merged’ some together]

Dryads are my favorite infantry unit, with 2 attacks each they deal out by far the most damage in my army. Building this unit of Dryads was certainly the best part of collecting them. Yes they are incredible on the battlefield, but the inspiration to make them unique to my army was huge.

First though I should explain that Dryads are ‘spiteful and deadly creature with hearts akin to shards of ice. In the soul of a Dryad there is neither room nor regard for compassionor mercy, merely an uncompromising dedication to Athel Loren that makes even the most heartfelt vows of elf or man seem trival by comparison. To harm the forest is to incur the wrath of the Drayds and invoke a deadly and unyielding vengeance that will follow the transgressor until his body has been ruined or broken at their hands.’

With this in mind I decided the make them as vicious looking as possible, I did this by careful selecting the positions of the arms. I used some other pieces to replace arms to show that they really are part of the forest. This included using (what can best be described as) their hair/crown that they have glued to the back of their heads as a limb on a particular model making it look like the Dryad was regenerating its arm, also using a branch which is usually glued to the bases to add scenary as an arm to give the model a larger presence.

Painting this unit was also incredibly fun. I decided that using brown wouldn’t give the unit the spiritual/evil look I wanted. So I went with a base coat of Shadow Grey to show that they aren’t merely little treemen. To draw attention to their fierce looking faces and back pieces, I painted them a much lighter bleached bone giving it a feel of peeled wood. In order make Dryads look more than a mere military unit, I decided to paint each one with unique markings, This included painting half the face a brown of giving them a predominately brown head and back piece.

I love this unit and the way it turned out. it was my first true experiment with warhammer after I rekindled the love for the hobby.

I also love this unit for another reason. This unit is the first time that My Flower attempted to understand why I kept dragging her to Games Workshop. The final photo in this post (of a lone Dryad) is the first model she painted and as such it holds a special place in my heart. Its always the Branch Nymph(Unit Leader) making sure it is the last to leave the table.

Well that is it for this week. If there are any comments please feel free to leave me an ask, I don’t do anonymous asks so make sure you have an account.

Next week will be the week of the Glade Guard, my first unit to be built and painted when I restarted collecting. In the mean time keep an eye out for my reports about my painting progress.

Painting Post #2

Today’s Black Orc(Which I finished about 15 mins ago), is the first model in the front rank. I had to rearrange the models after discovering that they didn’t fit quite right so my previous Black Orc that I posted is actually the 5th on the front rank.

First thing just to explain the Photos.

Photo #1 - Completed model with the shoulder pads (explained later)
Photo #2 - Front view of the model before I added details and shoulder pads
Photo #3 - Rear view of the model before I added details and shoulder pads
Photo #4 - Photo of the shoulder pads before details and gluing to the Orc
Photo #5 - Front view of the completed model
Photo #6 - Rear left view of the completed model
Photo #7 - Rear right view of the completed model

On to the post.

  1. The model was first sprayed Chaos Black.
  2. Blazing Orange was then added to all of the model which was ‘Heavy Armor’.
  3. Warlock Purple was then added to the Jaw piece, small pieces of armor and fabric.
  4. The chainmail and weaponry where painted Tin Bitz.
  5. The horns on the helmet where based Scorched Brown, Then Vomit Brown was added leaving small indents of the Scorched Brown, Bleached Bone was the added leaving indents of the Vomit Brown, Skull White was then added to the tips of the Horns.
  6. Catachan Green formed the base of the skin, which was then washed Dark Angels Green with another layer of Catachan Green on the muscles.
  7. The Weaponry was washed with watered Chaos Black, once dry it the end ‘cutting edge’ of the blade was redone with Tin Bitz and tipped with Chainmail.
  8. Scorpian Green is used to highlight areas of Blazing Orange.
  9. Watered down Chaos Black is applied to the recessed of the boots and top of armor.

I converted 2 of the Shields you get on the Weapon/Command sprue gluing the tops together to make the ‘shoulder pads’ on the top of the Orc, this was done to give the model (which doesn’t have much impact on the eyes due to its short height in comparison to the models around it) a unique look.

The ‘Shoulder Pads’ were painted as follows’

  1. They were Sprayed Chaos Black
  2. Blood red was then added the centre of the pads.
  3. Tin Bitz was used on the ends of the pads.
  4. The risen parts where painted using Chainmail
  5. The inside of the face which is cut out of the centre (twice) was give a chainmail coat so that the light reflected better, drawing attention to them in photos and in battle.

All this(above) leaves the model with a look that matches the rest of my Black Orc horde as well as matching my Orcs and Goblin army’s name (RustI StomPa’s) and colour Scheme.

Check back tomorrow when I hope to have another Black Orc completed, I have a lot of models left to paint so may hop to a different unit or army all together.

Models that need painting are.

  • Orc Boyz
  • Rock Lobba

I just painted this Black Orc.

The colour Scheme is Blazing Orange and Warlock Purple, Highlighted with Scorpion Green, Metal is done using Tin Bitz. The weapon has been washed heavily in the middle to make the edge a lighter shade of Tin Bitz. The Horns on the helmet are done with Vomit Brown leaving black triangles at the base of the horn, next layer is Bleached Bone, making sure the leave a small line of the Vomit Brown underneath, The horns are then finished with Skull White on the end. All wood like the handle for the weapon are painted Vomit Brown. The entire model is spray painted Chaos Black.

Graveyard Earth is used to paint the edge, Goblin Green is used for the flat of the base.

Modeling sand will be applied once I have a new PVA glue.

My Black Orcs.

All the black ones are freshly built, 13 more to build then they will be added to the orange & purple ones, then they will make the full unit of 30.

God Damn

I hate you Black Orcs why can’t you just fit like a nice unit on a movement tray, spent half an hour working out how they will fit. I still got 15 to build

My Black Orc Boss added the shields you get in the weapon sprue to make the spiked fists
